A local surface modification technique isintroduced. By irradiating surface in aselected gas environment, new substancescould be obtained at the laser irradiated areasas the result of laser induced chemicalreaction. Using the mentioned technique,various patterns of dots, parallel lines andgridding on the substrates of Ti, Cr and Alwere produced. XRD and SEM were used tocharacterize the as-modified surfaces, andnitrides and oxides were detected in the laserirradiated areas. Wear tests were carried outon a reciprocating tribo-tester. The resultsshowed that wear behavior of the texturedsurfaces was obviously improved comparingto that of original surfaces.
