PHYTOSTEROSOMES (bilayered vesicles) were formed by Generol~R RE5 (GRE5)/ Generol~R RE10 (GRE10) in combination with cholesterol and dicetyl phosphate. Anti-HIV drug zidovudine (AZT) was encapsulated in aqueous regions of phytosterosomal bilayers. Composition of phytosterosomes made with GRE5 / GRE10 had an effect on vesicle size, Zeta potential (ZP) and percent AZT-entrapment. In vitro transdermal studies of phytosterosomal-AZT on excised rat skin (GRE5 and GRE10) showed higher transdermal permeation of AZT than AZT-PBS control. Phytosterosomes appear to have a promising future in transdermal drug delivery.
