The DOT employee of today needs to have a much larger skill set than the DOT employeeof 20 years ago. More work needs to be done by an ever shrinking pool of qualifiedapplicants.How do we increase the number of qualified applicants? How do we recruit the applicantswith the skills sets we need at the DOT? How do keep these well-qualified applicantsemployed at the DOT?US State DOTs use a variety of methods to recruit, train and retain the well-qualifiedapplicants. Student outreach programs for K thru 12 students. Internships for high schooland college students. Scholarships for college students majoring in transportation relatedareas. These are some of the steps being taken by US State DOTs in an effort to develop,recruit, train and retain employees with the skills necessary to the DOT.This paper and presentation will present examples or programs that US State DOTs areusing to attract and keep employees with the skills needed to operate a DOT in the 21stcentury.
