Evolving a Business-Driven Competency and Employee Development Program to Deliver Superior Business Results and Satisfy Regulatory Requirements

Through sustaining the competency and employee development program, an oilfield services company has documented exciting evidence that demonstrates a direct link between the competence of the workforce and the effect on business results. This evidence is in the form of strong positive correlations between the competence of the workforce and primary key performance indicators (KPIs), which include a mixture of strategic measurements in the safety, service quality, financial results, and human resources areas. This paper describes how the global competency and employee development program has evolved to enable its 11 product service lines (PSLs) and eight support functions in eight regions to achieve record levels of engagement in the program that supports the development needs of the existing 70,000 employees, including the 18,000 new hires from last year, to continue to have a positive effect on business results. This evolution has introduced improvements based on best practices, in addition to upgrades to the competency model and the online competency system (software). The implementation of fundamental changes to the program has been successful throughout the PSLs and regions as a result the change management approach adopted and the commitment of management. The improvements described in this paper and the foundation provided in the past enable this service company to be in an optimum position to meet regulatory or customer requirements related to managing the competence of the company's workforce.
