Greenfield project finance has always been an involved and intricate endeavor. While the energy sector was one of the pioneering fields for Greenfield project finance, experience has shown to us that it does not provide an exception to the rule. To some extent, the experience gained with utilities is applicable to our new programs calling for alternative and renewable energy projects, but in critical instances it still comes up short. This presentation highlights some of the strategic steps needed to be successful in many types of commercial Greenfield projects requiring capital-intensive infrastructure for alternative and renewable energy generation. The over-arching message is that a Greenfield energy project sponsor cannot treat financing as a singular focus, self-contained activity with his financing institutions-such as a separate process that would pre-empt and trump all other considerations from outset to finish.
