In this limited study, the elusive adhesive lock-up could not be found in the pilot coater or lab settings. The team, however, laid the groundwork toward understanding the relationship of release build, silicone selection, and polymer rheology. It can be concluded that typical polymer modifiers such as tackifiers and plasticizers, while contributing to higher release due to rheology modification, do not necessarily lead to release lock up. Likewise, higher levels of silicone crosslinker and CRA have an impact on release levels, but did not drive lock-up. Finally, the contradiction in results when comparing lab data to pilot coater data demonstrates the need to conduct a disciplined product development approach. The most important and surprising conclusion of this study was that an adhesive and a release liner supplier can work together for the benefit of the tape industry.
