Transportation shocks are part of the typical qualification environment for transportation containers developed at Sandia National Laboratories. These shocks require large displacements and low frequency content. Both requirements are beyond the capacity of traditional electrodynamic shakers. A hydraulic actuated shaker provides the key capabilities to accurately reproduce transportation environments. From 2001 to 2002, a vintage 1960's hydraulic shaker system was restored to service after seven years in retirement for performing large displacement low frequency testing. Current control technology was integrated with vintage test equipment to provide sufficient test capability without significant capital investment. This paper will describe that process, current test capabilities and possible future applications.
