We review the different physical cases in which a 1/3 shot-noise suppression factor has been theoretically predicted for elastic diffusive conductors, under both degenerate (coherent and incoherent) and nondegenerate conditions. We discuss the controversial universality of the result and the possibility that a common underlying mechanism could be at its origin. Some related open questions in the field of mesoscopic noise are also proposed.
