SYNTHESIS OF REALISTIC ON-ROAD WIND NOISE FROM WIND-TUNNEL TESTS

Comparison between car interior wind noise measured in wind tunnels with wind noise measured during on-road testing has shown that the noises sound different, due primarily to the effects of the turbulence that exists on the road. The wind-tunnel flow conditions are generally very close to statistically stationary, which is in contrast to real on-road situations, where the atmospheric wind varies greatly over short and long time scales. This paper proposes a technique for simulating realistic wind noise from wind-tunnel measurements. The technique draws on findings from earlier work, Peric et. al. (1997), which has shown that on-road wind noise deviates far more from both Gaussianity and stationarity than does wind-tunnel generated noise. The technique synthesizes sound pressure time series which have similar probability density functions and temporal variations to sounds recorded during on-road measurements, for a particular set of wind conditions. Further work is envisaged to incorporate 1) psycho-acoustic masking effects from the presence of engine noise, tyre noise, etc., and 2) the three-dimensional nature of the turbulence in the atmospheric wind.
