13C NMR Spectroscopy of Amorphous Hydrogenated BOron Carbide and Amorphous Hydrogenated Carbon Nitride

We report the 13C NMR spectra of chemical vapr deposited amorphous hydrogenated boron carbide and amorphous hydrogenated carbonnitride tin films. The amorphous hydrogenated boro carbide spectrum is dominated by one line at 15 ppm. We interpret this line as due to carbon bound in boron carbide icosahedra, because polycrystalline boron caride with boron carbide icosahedra as te unit cell gives a very similar NMR spectrum. The amorphous hydogenated carbon nitride NMR spectrum consists of two broad lines cnetered at 20 ppm and 130 ppm and two sharp lines at 131 ppm and 164 ppm. We interpret the broad line as due to sp usp 3 and sp sup 22 carbons in an amorphous environment and the sharp lines as due to nanocrystals of nitrogen-containing aromatic rings terminated by mino groups. Very similar sharp lines have been reported in sputtered carbon nitride, and we suggest that the source of these sharp lines in sputtered carbon nitride is the same as the sharp lines in amorphous hdrogenated carbon nitride.
