Nitrogen oxides have been identified as a main target for air quality improvement in Europe. Regarding diesel engine emission there are a variety of measures of engine technology capable to reduce NO_x emission. The majority of these measures, however, cause an opposite increase of particulate emission.This paper reviews recent work in this area contributing both to the measures by engine and fuel development.Our studies show the potential of model fuels and additives:1. A decrease of NO_x and Pm by employing model fuels (petrochemical or biomass-derived components)2. A significant decrease of Pm by applying a particulate filter which is self regenerating due to an iron containing fuel additive.3. A large effect on Pm emission by using a diesel fuel with an oxygen containing component.Taken overall, it is concluded that minimization of both Pm and NO_x can be achieved by applying novel fuel components/additives in conjunction with moderate engine modification. On the other hand some of the fuels shown are far from realisation because of economical aspects.
