Fly ash from Municipal SOlid Waste Incineration (MSWI) is frequently calssified as a hazardous waste, mainly due to lead and cadmium content. A global strategy on the management of the fly ash have been investigated. Its first step involves extraction of soluble salts and heavy metals through sequential leaching with water, followed by revovery of yeavy metals from the leaching solutionsy by cementation with zinc dust. results indicate that hazardous components can be s uccessfully removed from the fly ash, meeting the environmental requirements. Preliminary experiments on the subsequent extraction of dissolved metals appear to be promising, specifically cadmium nickel, mercury, zinc and lead; results indicate an easy recovery of lead from approximately 1 gram/liter to 6 milligrams/liter.
