Safety Assurance i nthe UK Rail Transportation Industry

The development of modern safety assurance methods and standards has brought about significant changes in the management of safety in the Uk rail transportation industry. Further change has been brought about by the transfer of the industry from state ownership to the private sector, and the creation of an infrastructure owner (Railtrack PLC), a large number of franchised train operators, and other supporting companies. This change has been backed by legislation which imposes a duty of safety management on allparties involved.
