Ecological Schools, The School as a Pedagogical Instrument

The aim of an ecological building is to be part of a sustainable development, and it is therefore planned according to the following principels: 1) The building shall be adopted to the properties of the place. 2) The buildig shall be designed so that resource management is achievedl. 3) The installations shall be made for recycling of the resources used. 4) The building and the installations shall create a healthy indoor climate. In an ecological school the architecture shall visualize the ecological considerations in such a way so that the students, who attend the school, understand the different ecological features that are used. For them it shall be obvious how things function and evident that the aim of the school building and the activities preformed in it is to be in harmony with the environment. They should also take part in running and taking care of the school. Trees, ponds and the nature around the school building are integrated in the design. Thick insulation, double iwndows, porches and glazed southern facades save energy. Solar collectors, photovolatic, firewood, windpumps and a small micro-hydro plant makes use of renewable energy sources. Local sewage systems composting of kitchen waste and vegetable gardens recycle nutrients. natural ventilation, good daylighting combined with healthy materials and paints give a good indoor climate.
