Exploring new technologies for the European Information Society: perspectives for multimedia content and tools

The advent of new digital tools, technologies and methods is having a profound impact on the information industries. Publishing and printing techniques have been established for several hundred years. Analogue technology for film, television, telephony and radio has been stable for most of this century. However, the current pace of technology change and take-up will very probably induce a major shift of these industries, as well as libraries, museums, science and academic societies and archives, towards relatively unknown digital territory. The question is: how fast and how far? And to whose benefit?
