The mechanism of traumatic vertical longitudinal tears of the meniscus is investigated. Refinements are made to an earlier model of meniscal injury. Increases in loading magnitude and rate are applied to the described test apparatus causing tissue disruptions in 17 of 18 bovine menisci. The validity of the proposed mechanism and the significance of the empirical results are discussed.
