Determining hyaluronan physicochemical properties from concentration polarization studies

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) play an important role in regulating extracellular matrix hydration, as well as in influencing solvent and species transport. Quantitative study of such effects requires accurate characterization of the concentration-dependent physicochemical properties of GAG solutions, e.g. diffusion coefficient, Darcy permeability, and/or osmotic pressure. Here we describe a in vitro experiment well-suited to studyign solvent transport through GAGs and to determining GAG physicochemical properties over a broad concentration range. Representative data using the GAG hyaluronan are presented.
