Educators involved with developing, revising, and teaching career education programs usually need information about the employment opportunities for their program graduates. Marine technology career education programs, because they train for specialized careers with limited regional employment opportunities, particularly need such employment information. This report explains methods for determining regional marine-oriented employment statistics using Bureau of Labor Statistics data , state employment security data, and a mailed survey, Statistics are presented as a two-dimensional matrix with the advantage of one axis having seven special marine-oriented industry subfields or categories and the other axis having eight commonly used occupational categories. Matrix results show that accurately determining statistics for four industry subfields is difficult. Statistical results problems do not detract from the overall project usefulness. In addition to the employment statistics obtained, developing the seven marine-oriented industry subfields increased awareness of the variety of marine-oriented industries and compiling a file of about 900 survey addresses for Maryland showed the extent of the marine-oriented business activity in Maryland.
