A new efficient fourth-order staggered FDTD scheme has been developed and applied to electromagnetic wave problems. It is fourth-order accurate in both space and time, conditionally stable, and highly efficient with respect to Yee's scheme. Moreover, it is very easily implemented and adapted to perfectly matched layers. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the efficiency of the method. The main disadvantage is that the scheme requires additional memory with respect to the Yee scheme. Fortunately, this can be offset by using fewer grid points in the computational domain.
