Implementation considerations for wire and cable in a railroad locomotive environment

Wiring distribution networks and cables are critical components of mobile business and safety systems currently being implemented on locomotives in North America. It is pointed out, in particular, that the local distribution box and the cabling in locomotives are critical components of the railroad's work order reporting system. These components must function in an adverse environment. The use of cross-linked polyolefin insulation, per AAR S-501 specification, special data wire insulation thicknesses, and unique shielding design, coupled with the limited number of qualified wire manufacturers resulting in customized products, places severe constraints on the procurement process. The unique requirements, design considerations, procurement, inspection, and testing processes necessary to ensure that these products operate properly in a railroad locomotive environment are described.
