This paper presents ratio controller of electro-mechanical dual acting pulley continuously variable transmission (EMDAP CVT) based on primary and secondary pulley position controllers using fuzzy-proportional-integral-derivative (FP1D) schemes. The EMDAP CVT system employs two movable pulley sheaves in both primary and secondary shafts to eliminate belt misalignment. The movable sheaves are actuated by DC motor driven electro-mechanically actuated pulley sheave (EMAPS) system. Both primary and secondary EMAPS systems are controlled using FPID controllers to adjust pulley sheave positions and achieve desired transmission ratio. Initial PID parameters are obtained using combination of Astrom and Hagglund relay feedback tuning method and Ziegler-Nichols formula. Square wave shifting patterns for the ratio range of 0.7 to 2.0 are used as inputs to test the performance of the proposed controllers. The experimental results show that the FPID ratio controller system performs better than PD controller in terms of response time and tracking error.
