The working group concurred, that in general terms, better educational programs for smart structure-like were needed. This need is driven by industry and research needs, and hence is more strongly felt in the mechanical and aerospace communities over the civil engineering community. As a preparation for the civil engineering industry it was felt that smart structures could be a part of a program categorized as something like "validated simulations". Such a program would contain the sensor, actuation, control, experimentation and monitoring elements of smart structures technology but with an emphasis on validating mathematical models of structural systems. The group also agreed that, in the U.S., due to ABET constraints, that one should only consider a smart structures technology (SST) program at the graduate level. Therefore the remaining discussion is limited to the graduate programs.
