Dispersion Polymerization in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

Acrylic polymers such as poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(2-ethylhexylacrylate) (PEHA) and other type of polymers such as polystyrene (PS) and poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), a precursor of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), were synthesized by dispersion polymerization in supercritical CO2. Monasil PCA surfactant was used to stabilize polymer particles in the supercritical carbon dioxide. The effects of initiator and surfactant concentrations as well as the monomer concentration were investigated experimentally. Microparticles of PMMA were emulsified in water. The sizes of the resulting polymer particles were in the range of 2.6 ~ 4.2 m. By sonication the agglomerated polymer particles were disrupted to form small primary particles.
