Data-Driven Implementation of Protocol Handling and Networking Interface for Networking Environment

This paper discusses the effectiveness of a data-driven implementation of interface covering protocol handling in multimedia networking environment. Realtime multi-processing in protocol/media handling are necessary in multimedia networking environment to meet time constraints in each media. In protocol handling, however, pseudo multi-processing on von Neumann processor can't meet time constraints because of runtime overheads by context switching. Therefore, the authors proposes implementing protocol/media handling on CUE (Coordinating Users' requirement and Engineering constraints) series data-driven processor which realize realtime multi-processing without runtime overheads. Then, this paper describes an implementation of networking interface which used CUE series data-driven processors and ATM/FastEthernet LSI to realize realtime multi-processing and programma-bility for flexible protocol handling. To minimize overheads in data transmission, the authors applies FPGA and Dual Port Memory to the data transmission in the implementation. We demonstrate that the networking interface board has achieved marimum throughput of OC-3 ATM. Finally, this paper discusses an implementation of data-driven layer 2/3 networking interface with CUE processors.
