This paper introduces a fuzzy control method for the ignition timing control of S.I. engines. The control system is made of a single-chip microcomputer and a cylinder pressure sensor. By detecting the cylinder combustion pressure of each cycle, the peak pressure position and its position variation rate are computed out and are used as the inputs of the ocntrol system. After the fuzzification of the inuts, rule evaluation and the edefuzzification, the optimum ignition timing can be given. Experiments are performed on-line on a S.I. engine test bed to verify the above concepts, and it is shown that the proposed method in effective in optimizing the ingition timing, particularly when engine work mode is changing.
