This paper presents an investigation of defluidization by discrete element method simulation. The particles used are 0.5 mm in diameter and 2650 kg/m~3 in density. An artificial interparticle force is imposed on the particles, which allows the process of defluidization to be reproduced. The global bed behaviour is related to mobility of individual particles, enabling quantitative description of the degree of defluidization. The mechanism of defluidization is analysed by considering particle collision dynamics and particle-particle interactions.
