Designing a flexible learning environment: learning from books

It has been noted many times that the book is a wonderful learning medium. It is easy to understand and to handle, it is universally available, it can be assimilated in many different ways, it presents no obstacles to the information contained within, and it does not become useless or obsolete as new technology is developed. In designing a learning environment for tertiary students studying at a distance, we have attempted to maintain as far as possible the benefits of simplicity, functionality, usability, accessibility and flexibility that books provide. We have used technology to add to this by attempting to create something that is closer to the authentic experience of studying on a campus.
