In this paper, the thermal decomposition of pure ammonium nitrate at open system and the effect of reacting fraction on the kinetic parameter of thermal decomposition were studied by power compensation DSC-TG at different heating rates. It was showed that the decomposition of ammonium nitrate (AN) starts at the melting temperature of AN and the decomposition was significant after the melting process was finished. No exothermal was observed at open experimental condition during the scanning range of temperature. The decomposition reaction fraction had influence on apparent activation energy. The activation energy increased with the decomposition fraction when the fraction was not more than 0.15 while the activation energy was decreased with the fraction when the fraction is greater than 0.15. The rate equation with three parameters is true of the process of AN decomposition.
