With an ongoing trend towards HVDC-transmission, the accumulation of space charges and related failure of HVDC-Extruded cable-system components, is more important than ever. Only a few space charge measurement methods, namely the pulsed electroacoustic method (PEA), the thermal step method (TSM) and the laser-induced pressure pulse method (LIPP), are useable with insulation thicknesses in the mm-range and applicable with cable-geometry. In this paper, important design aspects for a PEA measurement-system applicable for cables with thick insulation are systematically presented and the pitfalls are pointed out.
