To optimise the diagnosis process for Romanian railroad traffic safety installations a series of diagnosis charts were devised on which a diagnosis software package was created. In the first part of the paper we explain the installation's operation mode. At this point, the installation diagnosis is classically done at its sequence of operation steps, without detailing the actual failure cause. That is, only the schema where the failure appears is identified. In our work, through the diagnosis charts and the afferent software we can determine the actual failure cause. The software is written in Visual Basic. The maintenance staff using this software are quick and correct in reaching a decision about failure causes. Thus, train traffic delays caused by lengthy and problematic failure diagnosis is kept to a minimum. At the same time wrong maintenance decisions are eliminated and serious traffic events avoided.
