This paper introduces a new single phase multilevel inverter topology based on series connected switched sources. Here one basic module is developed. The proposed topology is comprised of series connection of the proposed basic module. It significantly reduces number of IGBTs, dc voltage sources, gate drivers used and increases number of levels. The mentioned topology has been synthesized for both symmetric and asymmetric source configurations. This work also introduces optimal structure of the mentioned topology based on different criterion. The advantage of this mentioned topology is shown in comparison with the conventional cascaded multilevel inverters and with some other proposed topologies in the literature. The validation of optimal structures is shown for a 63-level inverter and the validation of the proposed topology is ascertained by simulation using MATLAB and hardware embodiment of a single phase 15-level multilevel inverter.
