A miniaturized low-power synthesizer module with automaticfrequency stabilization for portable telephone applications

A compact low-power phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizernmodule which performs automatic frequency stabilization and intermittentnoperation is described. Two LSIs were developed to reduce both currentndrain and module size. One is a prescalar (3 mA at 1 GHz) using anhigh-performance bipolar process (SST), and the other is a PLL-AFC LSInusing 1.2-μm mixed-signal CMOS. A total current drain of 15 mA and annoverall size of 1.5 cm³ were achieved
