ATM deployment in the LAN backbone has grown steadily, but deployment of ATM services to the desktop has not kept pace. And of those ATM networks that are deployed to the desktop, few take advantage of native ATM services. Cells-in-frames technology enables native ATM services on desktops that are equipped with legacy Ethernet or Token Ring network adapters. ATM cells are encapsulated in MAC frames, alowing AT traffic to be carried over the LAN segment between the desktop and the CiF attachment device for forwarding onto the ATM backbone network. With proper implementation, CiF capability can be added to existing desktops and ATM-to-legacy-LAN edge devices at a small cost per device, thereby providing end-t-end antive ATM services.
