Heat treatment and surface modification are the key technology to enhance the effective use of materials through the utilization of optimum properties to solve social tasks we are facing. Traditional industrial technology made advancement leaving social demerit to be solved in this century. The environmental issue as global warming, energy and resource management are becoming the more important that industry technology should overcome. Simultaneously, the materials and processing technology have to contribute to the advancement of industrial technologies through the more effective use of materials to reduce friction and save energy and natural resources. Present article presents a short overview of automotive materials and additionally on selected aspects of heat treatment and surface modification technology of materials mainly used in automotive industry. After presenting several topics in surface hardening and modification methods to enhance the properties of materials, the relative scientific features and the future technical possibility are discussed.
