In 2008, a large scale landslip occurred at Kawakawa Bay, near Auckland, threatening the smallrncommunity and its virtual sole access road. Remedial works to stabilise the landslip involved,rnamongst other measures, construction of a compacted reinforced fill toe buttress and the installation ofrntwo rows of high capacity ground anchors. The anchors were drilled through both the natural residualrnmaterials, within the upper slope area, and the compacted fill toe buttress. The anchors used large,rn2.4m square, precast concrete face plates to bear against the ground and retain the landslip.rnThe purpose of this paper is to present data on the testing of the anchors and to use this data andrnbehaviour of the bearing plates as large-scale plate load tests to derive undrained stiffnessrnparameters for the natural residual soil.rnThe paper includes summary data and details of the soils tested, and concludes with discussion onrnpredicting plate displacements in anchor tests and suggested stiffness values for the natural residualrnsoils for this purpose.
