Surface settlements due to tail gap of tunnel boring machines cannot be reversed byrncompensation grouting of the gap, even if the volume-loss is overcompensated. This phenomenon canrnbe explained in terms of soil mechanics if we take into account the dilatancy-contractancy behaviour ofrnsand at loading reversals.
