A new method based on scanning-tunneling-microscope (STM) lithopgraphy was developed to fabricate single Ag nanoparticles on atomically flat Au(111) surfaces. The method was also used to transfer simple patterns as trench structures on Au(111) surfaces. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from probe molecules adsorbed on the surface of nanoparticles was quantitatively measured to reveal the relationship between the spatial distribution of particles and the enhancement of local electromagnetic (EM) field. Extra enhancement due to particle clustering was observed.
