In a semiconductor wafer fabrication factory, the R&D department shares facilities with the production department. It is not rare to see the goals of these two departments compete with each other and contribute to the delay of time-to-market. To solve the problem, the present study has adapted the concepts from X-factor theory to construct an R&D engineering lot management model. In this model, the X-factor has been used to track the on-time-delivery performance of the new R&D technology, while the F-factor has been identified as an index to reflect R&D's holding cost and manufacturability, which at same time evaluate the maturity of the technology. To prove the model is effective, the authors of this study further test it by the data which was obtained from a semiconductor wafer fabrication factory, and found it successfully to improve the operational performance and shorten the R&D cycle time, which ultimately enable a factory achieving a global optimization.
