摘要

This paper describes the current status of three of ESA'slarge technical handbooks covering structural materials, inserts and adhesive bonding, which are being updatedand transferred to the ECSS document system.A main role of the handbooks is to promote informationexchange across the whole European space community. Each handbook represents a single-source ofaccumulated knowledge on materials and theirapplications directly appropriate to space projects:information that may otherwise be difficult or time-consumingto locate. As such they are a recognised andvaluable information source for engineers and designersinvolved in space structures.Since their conception in the mid-1980s, the technicalcontent of the handbooks has constantly evolved toreflect the changing requirements of space projects: theEuropean space community has developed Ariane V,developed and contributed to reusable launchertechnologies and the manned international space station(ISS), along with the development of numerous largecommercial satellites and various scientific payloads.Likewise, new materials have become commerciallyavailable, whereas some have been withdrawn. Theapproaches used in design and verification have alsoevolved to meet the new demands. The decision to include the handbooks within the ECSSdocument systems enabled the opportunity to evaluate, revise and update the whole technical content prior topublication of the ECSS versions.Electronic publishing has advanced significantly duringthe life of the handbooks. The ECSS versions of SMH,IDH and ABH (along with others of the series) are nowavailable on CDROM. Consequently, the handbookswill continue to provide valuable information in acoherent, usable way and to maintain their position as aunique information source for a wide range of currentand future space projects.
