摘要

Podiatry is a relatively under-researched area of healthcare, and has historically had little attention from ergonomists. Recent studies have highlighted the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs) and burn-out amongst podiatrists, but no work has been done on organizational or professional factors, and the possible links to health, well-being and productivity. A participant observation study was conducted, the lead author working as a National Health Service (NHS) podiatrist for 18 months. Results reveal ergonomic issues structured around three distinct categories: task-based, professional and organizational, with podiatrists being exposed to a number of occupational health hazards preventable through ergonomics interventions. These might include training schemes, improved job design and better maintenance of instrumentation.
