MAXIMISING VMC: THE EFFECTS OF SYSTEM QUALITY AND SET-UP ON COMMUNICATIVE SUCCESS

Video-mediated communication (VMC) is becoming more widely used in workplace and conference settings, with a variety of different systems available. Whilst there are methods of improving VMC regardless of the system used, the efficacy of any system is largely mediated by its quality and set-up. This review considers the different forms of VMC, discussing the impact that factors such as audio quality, delay, and image size and quality have on communication. Recommendations are made for good practice when working with video-mediated technologies, using theoretical and empirical evidence to suggest ways of maximising available resources for optimal communication.
