Land subdivision is a spatio-temporal process. Decomposition, consolidation and thematic changes of land parcels may occur as results of approving a development plan or issuing building permits. The change of land parcels may be viewed as the changes of their states over time. The spatio-temporal database for a computer supported land subdivision system may be viewed as the collection of the states of all the parcels concerned and transformed from version to version by any of the parcel mutations There are two key issues involved in constructing spatio-temporal database for such a system. One is to maintain both the current and historical states of land parcels and make them accessible to users. The other is to trace and analyze subdivision paths and causal relations betweendifferent states. There have been several conceptual spatio-temporal models that can maintain and access different states of spatial objects along time. But for representing causal relations between different states of a spatial entity, people usually use logical pointers in data structure. As time progresses, more and more versions would emerge and these kinds of links would become very complex and progressively less acceptable. Thus tracing subdivision paths and causal relations between differnt states explicitly and easily remain a problem not properly resolved. The spatio-temporal relations between farther and son land parcels were analyzed by the authors in this paper, It was found that there exist both spatio-overlap and time-meet topological relations between farther-son land parcels. The spatial constraint and temporal constraint between father-son parcels were defined and a relation-oriented approach was proposed for tracing the causal relations between different states.
