Optical fiber sources amplifiers and special fibers for application in multiplexed and distributed sensor systems

Abstract: The paper describes how active fiber devices andspecial fibers can enhance the performance ofmultiplexed and distributed sensing systems. The use ofactive fibers, such as rare-earth- doped types, can actas powerful CW or pulsed sources, as wavelength-tunablesources, high-power amplifiers, and as low- noisedetector preamplifiers. Thus many arrangements forsensor- multiplexing or distributed sensing, which mayappear unattractively lossy on first consideration, maybecome perfectly viable with the insertion of activedevices. The paper reviews possible applications ofspecial fibers in multiplexed and distributed sensors.The use of such fibers can greatly enhance theperformance of sensor systems and even allow theconstruction of new types of optical sensors which werenot previously possible with conventional fibers.!30
