PASSENGER YACHTS OUTFITTING MATERIALS, CERTIFICATION AND FIRE LOAD CALCULATION

The introduction of the Passenger Yacht Code (PYC) has increased the complexity for the Designer, Interior Architects, Owners and their representatives in the choice of materials outfitting within accommodation spaces, service spaces and control stations. Such requirements, although familiar to most of the Cruise Ship architects and Companies, are relatively new for the Yacht architects, Yacht Builders and Owners, as the level of finish on such vessel is generally far more luxurious when comparing it to a commercial vessel and sometimes the products sought are not certified. The regulations within the PYC and the research for alternative and innovative products, which however should produce a finish product agreeable to the Owners, are in some cases problematic not only for their application but also for what concerns the interpretation of the legislation.
