REVIEW OF MAJOR DEVELOPMENTS IN GROUND ENGINEERING OVER THE LAST 20YEARS AND CURRENT TRENDS

The paper has been prepared as the basis for the 2008 John Mitchell MemorialLecture. It reviews major developments in ground engineering over the last 20years, not from the point of view of technical processes, but from the drivers thathave driven these developments and the needs that they have met. It concludeswith a glimpse into the future and suggests to where current trends will probablylead us. By its nature such a review is closely aligned with personal experienceand it relies heavily on case histories largely from within the writer’s ownexperience over that period.
