The RSM (Resource System Method) is based on the assumption that resource management and a conscious transformation of the identity of place are crucial points of the architect's work. The method consists of a model, constituting a system of resource and a procedure, indicating the steps of design work in order to ensure the presence of resource management by introducing cheque points of evaluation. The model categorizes the resources in three main groups, human, material and cultural resources. Each main group is divided into two sub-groups, expressing the dialectic nature of the group. The method is used as a frame of reference when interpreting, pointing at the connections between the elements, and also as a kind of cue list when discussing the resource/premise problem. The RSM method has been used several times in teaching architectural design and problem solving in connection with design courses held in Norway and China during the last few years. Experiences achieved in these cross-cultural design situations make out the main part of this paper.
