In some areas of fiber optic sensing, one ean expect improvement in measurement accuracy and an expansion of the fields of application with the use of infrared transmitting fibers. Unfortunately, sensor development often fails due to a lack of suitable optical designs based on a thorough knowledge of fiber characteristics. This article provides an overview of infrared fiber sensors, describing what infrared fibers can do, which infrared fibers should be selected for what purposes, how the sensor system should be designed. Chronological tables are also shown for infrated fiber thermometry and spectroscopy.
