In design process for an electromagnetic circuit of a solenoid actuator, a designer utilizes CAE tools such as a simulation software package based on FEM electromagnetic field analysis. The designer empirically determines the initial dimensions of the solenoid in the first simulation trial, and attempts to optimize it by trial-and-error iteration. However, CAE tools are usually cumbersome to use for iterating. This paper aims to develop the preprocess that provides a designer with the roughly optimized dimensions of the solenoid for the first simulation trial. The rapid optimization process from the viewpoint of both economy and compactness is presented.
