We have researched three-dimensional (3D)video technology based on spatial imaging with the aim ofimplementing a next-generation broadcasting service. Thistechnology allows viewers to watch 3D videos without usingspecial glasses. The main challenge associated with itspractical application is that a large amount of rayinformation needs to be acquired and reproduced to improvethe quality of the 3D videos. Therefore, we are developing atechnique to acquire high-density ray information frommulti-viewpoint images captured using a multi-camerasystem, in addition to devising 3D display methods usingmultiple display devices. We have developed a prototypesystem based on our novel display method called “AktinaVision” that can reproduce 3D videos of real objects at aresolution of approximately 330,000 pixels, three times thatof conventional display methods. In this paper, we presentthe most recent results of our research on 3D televisionbroadcasting services.
