Guided waves have been used for many years to survey pipes over a long distance for a single probe location. The standard convention is that most guided wave systems can detect defects on the order of 5% of the total pipe wall cross section with the understanding that pipe coatings, whether the pipe is buried or not, and general condition of the pipe can ultimately affect this detection sensitivity. The industry is now trying to get a better understanding of the probability of detection (POD) of the guided wave method. POD determination is conditional upon pipe geometry, type of anomaly, and factors determined by the design of each particular guided wave testing (GWT) system. In this paper, a preliminary investigation of the POD for magnetostrictively generated guided waves is described for 4-inch diameter pipe. The POD results are provided along with the parameters that affected the POD results.
